“We aim to be Carbon Neutral by 2012”
September 2009: ODonnell Furniture’s challenge for the next decade is the “Green” question so the company has committed to become Carbon Neutral by 2012.Over the next 40 years or so, the Construction Industry will have to halve its emissions to meet government targets. However, it’s no good waiting. Action and communication between all levels of disciplines in our industry - from architects and designers to manufacturers and builders - needs to be pursued continuously.
Our last few Profiles have detailed how we at ODonnell Furniture Makers are taking the Green question seriously and we have outlined several actions we have already taken. While some are major departures from our standard ways of working and thinking, others appear to be small changes. But they are all equally important in reducing the carbon footprint of one of the most sophisticated manufacturing facilities in Ireland.
We are currently working towards achieving the ISO 14001 environmental award for the way in which we manage the disposal of the waste from all our manufacturing stages. Another of our most recent enviromental moves has been to reconsider our onsite power usage.
We have now installed the most efficient lighting we could find and we have adopted Power Factor Correction Technology by modifying each and every one of our machines to use the least amount of power possible. We are now employing a suite of intelligent technologies to monitor and adjust the amount of individual power loadings used within our 60,000 sq ft factory.
As a consequence of these initiatives, we are not only making savings on our own energy bills but we are also cutting our energy use significantly and decreasing the amount of harmful CO2 emissions into the environment.
